Andranomena Special Reserve

Andranomena Special Reserve is a protected natural area in western Madagascar, part of the country's national network of aires protégées. Created by decree on 28 October 1958, it lies roughly 30 kilometers northeast of the coastal town of Morondava and is administratively part of the rural commune of Bemanonga. The reserve covers about 6,420 hectares of the Menabe region's distinctive dry deciduous forest, scattered with temporary lakes and dominated by towering baobab trees. The reserve is recognized as a site of scientific interest because the vast majority of its flora and fauna are endemic to Madagascar, including several species found nowhere else. Its landscapes of baobab-studded clearings, seasonal wetlands, and dry canopy forest make it both a conservation stronghold and an important complement to the better-known Avenue of the Baobabs that lies farther to the south. Beyond its ecological value, Andranomena is embedded in a cultural landscape inhabited by Malagasy communities of the Sakalava and Korao ethnic groups, whose presence shapes how the surrounding land is used and perceived. The reserve is accessible throughout the year and stands out as a quieter, ecologically rich alternative for visitors exploring the Menabe region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
