Tapiche Reserve

Tapiche Reserve is a private conservation area in Peru's Loreto Region, situated in the Tapiche District of Requena Province along the basin of the Tapiche River, an east-bank tributary of the Ucayali. Accessible only by waterway, the reserve spans roughly 18,803 hectares of lowland Amazonian forest and is notable for bringing together igapo, varzea, and terra firme forest types in close proximity, a combination that is uncommon within the broader Amazon basin. The property is distinguished by its mosaic of alluvial plains, floodplain swamps (aguajales), gently undulating terraces, and low hilly terrain, all threaded through by a network of small channels, oxbows, meanders, and lakes connected to the Tapiche River. Its dark, acidic "black water" river system supports a dense and biodiverse mix of large mammals, primates, raptors, reptiles, amphibians, and aquatic life, including several threatened species such as the jaguar, the bald uakari, the Amazonian manatee, and the harpy eagle. Beyond its ecological profile, the reserve functions as a long-term conservation and research initiative. A 2011 land survey and rapid species inventory documented a substantial portion of its flora and fauna, contributing baseline scientific knowledge about an area where the lowland Amazon still maintains a high degree of ecological continuity.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
