Vodlozero National Park

Vodlozero National Park is a vast protected area in the Russian North, spanning the borderlands between the Republic of Karelia and Arkhangelsk Oblast. It was established to safeguard the natural complex of Lake Vodlozero and the Ileksa River basin, encompassing extensive old-growth taiga forests, lake systems, wetlands, and traditional northern landscapes. The park straddles the Pudozh and Onega districts, with its administrative center in Petrozavodsk and field offices in Kuganavolok and Onega. The region around Lake Vodlozero, known as Vodlozerye, has been inhabited for thousands of years and carries a layered cultural heritage that includes traces of Mesolithic and Neolithic settlement, medieval Slavic frontier communities, Old Believer refuges, and surviving wooden chapel and pogost architecture. In 1991 the area was formally designated a national park, and in 2001 it became the first national park in Russia to receive UNESCO biosphere reserve status. Today the park serves multiple roles, as a refuge for intact taiga ecosystems, a center for biodiversity research, a base for ecotourism development (including Russia's first master plan and business plan for ecotourism), and a custodian of one of the largest masses of untouched forest in Europe's northwest.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
