Xinjiang Bulgan Beaver National Nature Reserve

The Xinjiang Bulgan Beaver National Nature Reserve is a nationally protected area in the far north of China, situated in the eastern foothills of the Altai Mountains along the Sino-Mongolian border. Located in Qinghe County within the Altay Prefecture of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, the reserve exists primarily to safeguard the Mengxin beaver, a subspecies of the Eurasian beaver that lives nowhere else in the world. Its core landscape is a narrow, 50-kilometre stretch of the Bulgan River, flanked by wetlands, riparian forests, and open valley plains, which together form an unusually rich riverine habitat. What makes the reserve exceptional within China's protected-area system is its narrow ecological focus: it is the country's only national nature reserve whose primary object of protection is a nationally protected wild animal, the beaver. The reserve also provides habitats for a wide range of other wildlife, such as raptors, waterbirds, ungulates, and fish species, many of which are of conservation significance in their own right. With more than twenty percent of China's beaver population living along the river it protects, the reserve plays a vital role in the survival of this ancient, once-widespread species. Beyond its ecological importance, the reserve reflects a long story of conservation effort in a remote and dry landscape. From a provincial initiative in 1980 to a nationally designated reserve in 2013, the area has been shaped by ongoing human efforts to balance local pastoral livelihoods, infrastructure development, and the survival of one of China's most unusual mammals.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
