A Bass Strait marine reserve protecting the shallow continental shelf between Victoria and Tasmania.

Beagle Commonwealth Marine Reserve

Beagle Commonwealth Marine Reserve is an Australian marine protected area in Bass Strait, lying off the southern coast of Victoria and near Tasmania's Flinders Island. Covering roughly 2,928 square kilometres of shallow continental shelf waters, the reserve sits on a submerged landscape that once formed a land bridge, the Bassian Plain, between Tasmania and mainland Australia during the last ice age. The reserve is part of the South-east Commonwealth Marine Reserve Network and is administered by Parks Australia on behalf of the Commonwealth of Australia. Its boundaries enclose Kent Group National Park as well as the Hogan and Curtis Island groups, placing the marine area alongside significant island protected estates and near the well-known Wilsons Promontory Marine National Park. Internationally classified as an IUCN Category VI protected area with sustainable use of natural resources, the Beagle reserve is zoned entirely as Multiple Use, meaning certain activities such as recreational fishing are permitted while commercial fishing and mining require approval. Maritime heritage is also embedded in the reserve through shipwrecks on its seafloor, including vessels lost during the Second World War.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
