Boolcoomatta Reserve

Boolcoomatta Reserve is a large private protected area in the far north-east of South Australia, situated roughly mid-way between Adelaide and Broken Hill. It lies in a remote, arid part of the country near the small settlement of Olary, on land that was previously run as a sheep station for around 150 years. Since 2006 the property has been owned and managed by Bush Heritage Australia as a conservation reserve. The reserve covers an area of several hundred square kilometres and protects a representative slice of the South Australian arid zone. Its landscape combines flat plains with undulating rocky ranges, supporting open Acacia woodland, chenopod shrublands such as saltbush, tussock grasslands, and dry creek lines lined with river red gums. Boolcoomatta is recognised as an important refuge for native wildlife in a landscape that has been heavily modified by pastoral use. Its protected-area status within Australia's National Reserve System, achieved through a perpetual conservation covenant, underlines the site's long-term conservation significance. The reserve is also part of a broader Important Bird Area identified by BirdLife International, and is noted for populations of several threatened bird species and recovering populations of native mammals and reptiles.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
