Spain's finest Mediterranean forest reserve in the Montes de Toledo

Cabañeros National Park

Cabañeros National Park is a protected natural area in central Spain, situated within the Montes de Toledo mountain range across the provinces of Ciudad Real and Toledo. Established in November 1995, it represents the finest and most extensive remaining example of Iberian Mediterranean forest in the country, protecting a rich mosaic of oak woodlands, scrubland, river valleys, and the distinctive flatland terrain known as the raña. The park spans approximately 40,856 hectares, making it one of Spain's larger national parks, and encompasses the mountain ranges of Chorrito and Miraflores along with the Rocigalgo massif, whose summit reaches 1,448 meters. The park's ecological significance is profound, harboring exceptional biodiversity within its Mediterranean woodland ecosystems. More than 1,000 vascular plant species coexist alongside approximately 550 lichen species, representing roughly one-fifth of the Iberian Peninsula's total. The park serves as a Special Protection Area for birds and forms part of the European Union's Natura 2000 network, designated both as a Zone of Special Protection for Birds (ZEPA) and a Site of Community Importance (ZEC). Its three principal geological resources—fauna, flora, and geology—combine to make Cabañeros one of Spain's most scientifically valuable protected areas. Beyond its natural heritage, Cabañeros carries cultural significance rooted in centuries of traditional pastoral use. The park derives its name from the conical huts or cabañas that shepherds and charcoal burners traditionally built as temporary shelters while working in the fields. This cultural landscape, shaped by centuries of sustainable human interaction, coexists with the park's strict protection status, offering visitors a window into both natural preservation and the historical relationship between communities and their environment.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate
