Waterfall park protecting high-altitude paramo ecosystems in the Venezuelan Andes

Chorro El Indio National Park

Chorro El Indio National Park is a protected area in the Venezuelan Andes, situated in Táchira State to the east of the city of San Cristóbal. The park encompasses approximately 17,000 hectares of mountainous terrain within the Maravillaz mountain range, featuring a remarkable altitudinal gradient that rises from around 1,100 meters to 2,600 meters above sea level. The landscape is characterized by a series of dramatic paramo ecosystems, the unique high-altitude tropical ecosystems found only in the northern Andes, which support distinctive vegetation adapted to cool, wet conditions. At the heart of the park lie the waterfalls that give the protected area its name, the Chorro El Indio and Chorro El Franklin, both originating from the headwaters of the Zúñiga River. Established by presidential decree in December 1989, the park was created to preserve this distinctive mountain environment and its ecological communities, which represent some of the most biodiverse habitats in northern South America. The region experiences a warm mountain rainy climate with temperatures ranging from 12 to 23 degrees Celsius and average annual rainfall exceeding 2,000 millimeters.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
