El Imposible National Park

El Imposible National Park is a tropical forest protected area in southwestern El Salvador, situated within the Apaneca Ilamatepec Mountain Range. Established on 1 January 1989, the park covers 38.20 square kilometers of mountainous terrain ranging from approximately 250 to 1,425 meters above sea level. The park derives its name from the perilous gorge that historically claimed the lives of farmers and pack mules transporting coffee to the Pacific coast, making the passage famously difficult and dangerous. The landscape encompasses eight river systems that feed the watershed for Barra de Santiago and the coastal mangrove forests, creating a vital hydrological connection between the highlands and the Pacific coastline. El Imposible remains one of Central America's most biodiverse protected areas, preserving significant remnants of tropical forest that support numerous endemic and threatened species.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
