Hato El Cedral

Hato El Cedral is a major ecological, historical, and cattle-ranching estate located in the Llanos region of southwestern Venezuela, within the Mantecal parish of Muñoz Municipality in Apure State. The property covers a very large expanse of flat seasonal wetlands drained by the Caicara, Orichuna, and Matiyure rivers and their tributaries, forming a mosaic of savanna, gallery forest, and seasonally flooded habitat that supports an exceptionally rich community of animals and plants. The reserve is widely recognized as one of the most important wildlife sanctuaries in the Venezuelan Llanos, renowned for large mammals such as capybaras and howler monkeys, giant snakes including anacondas, caimans, and one of the richest bird lists recorded in the country. Beyond its ecological value, the site carries deep historical significance as a long-standing cattle hacienda whose landscape is thought to have inspired the setting of the classic Venezuelan novel Doña Bárbara. Today Hato El Cedral is administered by the Venezuelan state and operated in combination with private eco-tourism concessions, making it a flagship destination for nature-based travel, wildlife photography, horseback excursions, and boat safaris through the flooded llanos.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
