Huocheng Steppe Tortoise National Nature Reserve

The Huocheng Steppe Tortoise National Nature Reserve is a nationally designated protected area in Huocheng County, Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of northwestern China. Established at the prefectural level in 1983 and elevated to national status in 2016, it is the first national nature reserve in China created specifically for the conservation of the four-clawed, or steppe, tortoise (Testudo horsfieldii) and its dry steppe habitat. The reserve lies along the southern foothills of the middle Tianshan Mountains, above the entrance of the Guozigou valley and along tributaries of the Ili River. Its landscape is shaped by Quaternary loess deposits eroded into feather-pattern gullies and rolling hills, a continental temperate climate with cold winters and hot summers, and semi-arid vegetation dominated by sagebrush steppe. Beyond the tortoise, the protected landscape supports raptors, mammals, reptiles, and a distinctive flora of ephemeral spring plants. The reserve is significant both for its role in rescuing one of China's rarest tortoise populations from extreme decline and for its representation of a fragile loess hill ecosystem at the transition between the Tianshan Mountains and the Ili River basin. It combines ecological protection, habitat restoration, and an active captive breeding program aimed at stabilizing wild tortoise numbers.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
