Iberá Provincial Reserve

Iberá Provincial Reserve is a massive protected area in the northwest of Corrientes Province in northeastern Argentina, established on April 15, 1983, as the largest reserve of its kind in the country. It encompasses an enormous mosaic of swamps, bogs, shallow lagoons, sluggish streams, and natural sloughs that together form one of South America's most important freshwater reservoirs. The reserve safeguards a major portion of the broader Iberá Wetlands system, a landscape whose name comes from a Guaraní expression meaning "bright water." In 2002, a core zone of the wetlands was designated as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention, recognizing its global ecological significance. Within the reserve's boundaries sit two distinct protected units, Iberá Provincial Park (created in 2009 from provincial public lands) and Iberá National Park (formally created in 2018 on former private ranches donated to the Argentine state by a conservation foundation). The remainder of the reserve is largely composed of working cattle ranches, creating a patchwork where conservation, restoration, and traditional land use coexist.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
