Ikh Nartiin Chuluu Nature Reserve

Ikh Nartiin Chuluu Nature Reserve is a protected area in Dornogovi Province in the arid eastern Gobi region of Mongolia, several hundred kilometers southeast of Ulaanbaatar. Established in 1996, it covers a sweeping landscape of rocky granite outcrops interspersed with dry steppe and semi-desert grassland, broken by sheltered valleys, ravines, and seasonal springs. The reserve is internationally recognized as one of the most important strongholds for the argali, the large and increasingly rare wild sheep of Central Asia, and it also supports Siberian ibex, several gazelle species, and a broad community of steppe carnivores and smaller mammals. Beyond its ungulates, Ikh Nartiin Chuluu is valued for the unusually diverse fauna and flora that have managed to persist in this otherwise harsh environment. More than two hundred plant species have been recorded here, and the vegetation shifts between sagebrush-dominated communities in wet years and feather grass- and wheatgrass-dominated stands in dry ones. The reserve is also designated an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International, hosting raptors such as Himalayan and cinereous vultures, sandgrouse, wildfowl, and a wide variety of resident and migratory passerines. The combination of rocky refuge areas, sheltered valleys with willows and elms, and surrounding steppe pastures gives Ikh Nartiin Chuluu its distinctive character. It functions both as a living laboratory for arid-zone ecology and as a key site for long-term conservation of some of Mongolia's most threatened steppe species.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
