Bhutan's rugged northern wilderness spanning three climate zones

Jigme Dorji National Park

Jigme Dorji National Park is the second-largest national park in Bhutan, established in 1974 and named after the late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. The park covers approximately 4,316 square kilometers across five districts in northern Bhutan, including virtually all of Gasa District and portions of Thimphu, Paro, Punakha, and Wangdue Phodrang. Remarkably, the protected area spans all three climate zones of Bhutan, with elevations ranging from 1,400 meters to over 7,000 meters above sea level. This extraordinary altitudinal range creates a diversity of ecosystems from subtropical forests to alpine meadows and permanent snow fields. The park is home to approximately 6,500 people living in around 1,000 households who practice subsistence agriculture and animal husbandry within its boundaries. Jigme Dorji holds special significance as the only protected area in Bhutan where the nation's four national symbols—the takin (animal), blue poppy (flower), raven (bird), and cypress (tree)—all occur together.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
