Zanzibar's only national park protecting coastal forest, mangroves, and endemic wildlife

Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park

Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is the sole national park on the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar, located in the Kusini District of the South Zanzibar Region. Established in 2004 and covering approximately 50 square kilometers, this protected area represents the largest remaining stand of near-natural forest on Zanzibar, resting upon a reef limestone marine terrace. The park holds dual recognition as an IUCN Category II protected area and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve through the Man and the Biosphere Programme, designation that reflects its exceptional biodiversity value and the integration of conservation with sustainable community development. The park encompasses a remarkable diversity of ecosystems within a relatively compact area, including groundwater forests, coastal forests, grasslands, mangroves, salt marshes, and adjacent coral reef systems. This mosaic of habitats creates one of Zanzibar's most ecologically significant landscapes, supporting numerous endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. The surrounding transition zone is home to approximately 16,423 residents from culturally diverse Bantu communities, primarily the Makunduchi (Hadimu) people alongside Shirazi communities, who maintain traditional livelihoods intertwined with the park's natural resources. The park serves as Zanzibar's primary nature tourism destination, attracting roughly 10 percent of the island's annual visitors. Its ecological significance extends beyond terrestrial boundaries to include the marine ecosystems of Chwaka Bay, which functions as critical breeding and nursery habitat for numerous fish species and supports complex coastal food webs.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
