Khar Us Nuur National Park

Khar Us Nuur National Park is a large protected area in Khovd Province, in the far west of Mongolia. It sits within the Great Lakes Basin, a semi-arid desert steppe region edged by the Altai Mountains, and is built around a chain of three substantial lakes linked by water and wetland. The lakes, Khar-Us Nuur, Khar Lake, and Dörgön Lake, are bordered by extensive reed marshes that serve as one of the most important bird breeding grounds in northwestern Mongolia. More than two hundred bird species have been recorded in and around the park, supported by freshwater inflows from the Khovd River and the surrounding highland catchments. Established in 1997 and managed under Mongolia's national park system, the park combines open water, island, marshland, mountain, and steppe environments in a single protected landscape. Its conservation value lies in the contrast between its arid surroundings and the rich wetland habitat that the lakes sustain.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
