Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park is a distinctive protected area in northern Tanzania, situated in the eastern branch of the Great Rift Valley between the volcanic escarpment wall and the shallow, alkaline waters of Lake Manyara itself. The park encompasses approximately 325 square kilometers of land alongside the lake, which covers roughly 230 square kilometers when at capacity. This unique geography creates a remarkable diversity of habitats within a relatively compact area, ranging from permanent groundwater forests fed by springs at the base of the rift wall, through dense acacia woodlands and expansive alkaline grasslands, to extensive papyrus swamps and the lake's fluctuating shoreline. The park is administered by the Tanzania National Parks Authority and was established as a national park in 1960, evolving from an earlier game reserve designation in 1957. It forms a critical component of the larger Lake Manyara Biosphere Reserve, designated by UNESCO in 1981 under the Man and the Biosphere Programme, which recognizes the ecological significance of this ecosystem within the broader regional landscape.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
