Debeli rtič Landscape Park

The Debeli rtič Landscape Park is a coastal protected area on the northern tip of the Slovenian Adriatic coast, occupying a strategic position on the Ankaran (Muggia) Peninsula right at the border with Italy. The park combines a rugged mainland coastline with a substantial offshore marine zone, together covering roughly 340 hectares of land and sea. It was formally established in 2018 by the Municipality of Ankaran, expanding an earlier, smaller protected zone that had safeguarded the headland since 1991. The park's identity is shaped by its flysch geology, which produces distinctive cliffs, shallow coastal shelves, and a protected underwater reef. Vineyards cover much of the interior, while small patches of native oak, ash, and black beech woodland sit alongside planted Mediterranean pine along the shore. The protected marine area preserves seagrass meadows, sandbanks, and reefs that still support a rich mix of Mediterranean species. Debeli rtič represents one of the least disturbed stretches of the short Slovenian coastline thanks to its historical isolation and the limited development within its boundaries. This combination of preserved coastal, marine, and cultural landscape makes the park a regionally significant site for biodiversity protection, geological study, and quiet Mediterranean coastal exploration.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
