Naturwald Kraxenbach

Naturwald Kraxenbach is a large protected forest area in the Chiemgauer Alps of southeastern Bavaria, Germany. Covering approximately 1,801 hectares across the municipalities of Ruhpolding and Schneizlreuth, it sits along the German-Austrian border in a transitional zone between the Landkreis Traunstein and the Landkreis Berchtesgadener Land. The area is designated as a nature forest (Naturwald) under Bavarian forest law, meaning it is permanently removed from timber harvesting and left to develop naturally. It forms part of the broader Natura 2000 network, overlapping with the Östliche Chiemgauer Alpen FFH and bird protection areas, and includes the older Naturwaldreservat Fischbach, a 314-hectare reserve established in 1998. The forest is known for its diverse montane mixed woodland, ranging from lower-elevation spruce stands with beech and fir to higher-elevation larch-spruce forests near the Austrian border. Notable features include unusually tall holly trees, old-growth stands exceeding 200 years, and a landscape shaped by mountains such as the Sonntagshorn and Dürrnbachhorn.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
