Refugio Carapá

Refugio Carapá is a biological reserve in the Department of Canindeyú in eastern Paraguay, lying on the right bank of the Paraná River and roughly 260 kilometers north of Ciudad del Este. It is one of eight protected sites established around the Itaipu Dam area, the massive hydroelectric reservoir shared by Paraguay and Brazil. The reserve covers approximately 3,250 hectares of steep mountain terrain clothed in a mosaic of tall forest, low forest, swamps, and open camp vegetation. The refuge is administered as a research station, with permanent staff living on site and studying the drainage basin of the Carapá River. Its broader significance lies in offering a relatively undisturbed sample of sub-tropical humid habitat beside an enormous artificial lake, where Itaipu's conservation program has worked to preserve flora and fauna threatened elsewhere in the region. Refuge visitors, researchers, and ecotourism initiatives share a landscape where native forest, river valley, and reservoir meet.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
