Isle-Verte Bay National Wildlife Area

Isle-Verte Bay National Wildlife Area is a federally protected coastal wetland on the south shore of the St. Lawrence Estuary in Quebec, Canada. Located east of Rivière-du-Loup in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, it safeguards one of the largest cordgrass (Spartina) salt marshes remaining in southern Quebec, an environment that has become increasingly rare as similar marshes along the estuary have been lost to dredging, filling, or shoreline alteration. The reserve's identity is closely tied to migratory waterfowl. It is the most important breeding site in Quebec for the American Black Duck and serves as a major staging and feeding area for Snow Geese, Canada Geese, and a wide variety of other waterbirds and shorebirds during spring and fall migrations. Surveys have recorded hundreds of bird species using the site, with around sixty nesting locally. Beyond its ecological function, the area is recognized internationally as a Ramsar Wetland of Importance and forms part of an Important Bird Area, underscoring its significance within continental waterfowl conservation networks. Together with the adjacent Migratory Bird Sanctuary, the protected landscape forms a cohesive refuge of tidal marsh, tidal flats, and shallow open water at the mouth of the Rivière Verte.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
