Vauville Pond National Nature Reserve

The Vauville Pond National Nature Reserve is a small protected area on the western coast of the Cotentin Peninsula in Normandy, northern France. Established in 1976, it safeguards a large coastal freshwater pond about two kilometers long, separated from the English Channel by a narrow and fragile dune cord. The surrounding landscape combines granite massifs, sandstone substrate, and active coastal dunes, creating a compact mosaic of marine, dune, freshwater, and wetland environments within a single protected site. Although modest in size, the reserve harbors an unusually rich concentration of habitats for such a narrow coastal strip. Vegetation grades seaward from dry dune plants near the beach to wet reedbeds and open water in the pond itself, supporting diverse insects, amphibians, and especially birds, both resident and migratory. The site's importance lies less in grand scale than in the rare combination of a sustained freshwater body held in place by a living dune barrier directly against the Atlantic coast. Managed since 1983 by the Normand Ornithological Group, the reserve functions as a working natural area where conservation, monitoring, and public education coexist. Walking trails and a freely accessible bird observation hide allow visitors to experience the site without disturbing the wildlife that draws ornithologists to it from across northern Europe.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
