Réserve naturelle régionale de la tourbière des Saisies - Beaufortain - Val d'Arly

The Réserve naturelle régionale de la tourbière des Saisies - Beaufortain - Val d'Arly is a regional nature reserve in the northern Savoie department of France, within the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It straddles the Beaufortain massif and the Val d'Arly and is spread across the communes of Cohennoz, Crest-Voland, Hauteluce, and Queige. The protected area covers roughly 293 hectares and contains the largest acidic mountain peatland, or tourbière, of the entire Alpine arc. The reserve comprises two distinct zones: the Saisies peatland near the Col des Saisies and the small Lac des Saisies on the high ground of Queige. Because of its elevation around 1,650 meters and its cold, wet, oceanic-influenced mountain climate, the site supports relict glacial flora and fauna, boreal-style vegetation, and rare peatland species. Its biodiversity and ecological character have earned it the informal nickname 'petite Laponie' or 'little Lapland'. Although well known in winter as part of the cross-country ski domain of the Les Saisies resort, where the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics biathlon and cross-country events were held, the reserve remains strictly regulated. Access in summer follows marked trails and a dedicated discovery boardwalk, allowing visitors to experience one of the most important peatland ecosystems in the Alps without damaging its fragile habitats.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
