Vallée des Cailles Regional Nature Reserve

The Vallée des Cailles Regional Nature Reserve is a small but ecologically distinctive protected area in the Centre-Val de Loire region of north-central France. Covering just over 45 hectares on the commune of Boncourt in the Eure-et-Loir department, it lies along a roughly two-kilometer chalk valley on the northern edge of the state forest of Dreux, about fifteen kilometers northeast of the town of Dreux. The reserve protects a mosaic of calcareous habitats that have become rare in the wider agricultural landscape of the Paris Basin. Its north-facing slopes carry thermophilous downy oak woodland, scrub, and dry grassland influenced by a notably dry spring climate, while the south-facing slope supports spontaneous woodland and conifer plantations. The combination of chalk soil, flint-rich colluvium, and traditional grazing history has produced habitat diversity unusual for such a compact site. Vallée des Cailles is best known for its exceptional flora, particularly its dry grassland communities and a remarkable concentration of orchids; the reserve is also recognized for its geological setting and its long history of human use, from Paleolithic flint working through nineteenth-century brickmaking to the present-day conservation partnership with the Conservatoire d'espaces naturels.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
