Réserve naturelle régionale des tourbières du Morvan

The Réserve naturelle régionale des tourbières du Morvan is a regional natural reserve located in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of central-eastern France. Established in 2015, it covers 266 hectares spread across the Morvan massif within the departments of Nièvre and Saône-et-Loire. The reserve is composed of fourteen separate sections distributed over roughly thirty kilometers, collectively protecting twelve notable peatlands, or tourbières, and their associated habitats. The Morvan's cool, wet climate has made it one of the most favorable areas in France for peat formation. Many of the bogs were once used for grazing or mowing, but were gradually abandoned, allowing their characteristic vegetation and hydrology to recover. Today the reserve conserves a varied set of peatland landscapes, including raised bogs, transitional mires, peat-fringed ponds, and wet meadows, each reflecting a different stage of bog development and human history. Managed by the Parc naturel régional du Morvan, the reserve serves both as a conservation tool for fragile wetland habitats and as a platform for public discovery. Several sites are equipped with interpretive trails, boardwalks, and thematic paths that allow visitors to explore peatlands while minimizing their impact on these sensitive environments.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
