Réserve naturelle régionale du coteau et prairies des Caforts

The Réserve naturelle régionale du coteau et prairies des Caforts is a small regional nature reserve in the Pays de la Loire region of northwestern France, in the southern part of the Sarthe department. It lies within the Loir valley on the commune of Luché-Pringé and protects a calcareous hillside, an adjacent wet meadow, and a network of underground galleries left over from historical quarrying. The reserve combines three distinct landscape elements that are unusual to find in a single protected site: a dry, sunny limestone slope, a humid hay meadow fed by a small stream, and a subterranean cavity system with troglodyte heritage. Its modest footprint reflects a focused conservation effort on a small but ecologically rich patchwork, managed by the Conservatoire d'espaces naturels de la Sarthe (and now coordinated under the Pays de la Loire Conservatoire d'espaces naturels). Although small in area, the reserve is notable for the diversity of habitats compressed into its boundaries, supporting rare orchids, butterflies, and an important community of cave-dwelling bats. It illustrates how historic human use of a rural French landscape, from medieval stone extraction to mushroom cultivation, can leave a layered natural and cultural environment worth protecting.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
