Latvia's smallest national park protecting the Livonian Coast and Blue Hills at Cape Kolka

Slītere National Park

Slītere National Park is Latvia's smallest national park, established in 2000 on the Courland Peninsula in northwestern Latvia. The park occupies a distinctive coastal position at Cape Kolka, where the Irbe Strait meets the Bay of Riga, marking the southern outlet from the bay to the Baltic Sea. Although formally designated as a national park in 2000, the protected area traces its heritage to 1923 when it was established as the Slītere Nature Reserve, one of the oldest nature reserves in the Baltic States. The park encompasses approximately 265 square kilometers, including about 101 square kilometers of marine area in the Baltic Sea. Its landscape is characterized by the famous "Zilie Kalni" or Blue Hills, an ancient geological formation that once formed the shoreline of the Baltic Ice Lake. These hills support rich broadleaf forests that represent a significant ecological feature, while the park also contains extensive dune systems known locally as "kangari" with inter-dune bogs called "vigas." The park protects a substantial stretch of the Livonian Coast, home to traditional fishing villages that preserve the cultural heritage of the Livonian people. Slītere holds exceptional significance as a bird migration corridor along the Baltic flyways, making it one of Latvia's premier birdwatching destinations. The park's diverse habitats support a remarkable biodiversity that includes rare plant species, significant mammal populations, and some of the most southerly grey seal nurseries in the world.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
