A large lowland forest bios reserve in central Lithuania designed around rare breeding birds and old-growth forest values

Taujeиnaи, Užeиleиnio Forest Biosphere Polygon

The Taujeиnaи–Užeиleиnio miиеkuий biosferos poligonas is a large forest-dominated biosphere reserve in central Lithuania, spanning more than 22 500 hectares across parts of the Ukmerge, Anykšiai, and Panevezys districts. It sits roughly 20 km northwest of the city of Ukmerge and is crossed in the south by the busy Vilnius–Panevezys highway, which serves as a useful geographic reference for visitors traveling through the area. The polygon was established in 2004 as one of Lithuania's more distinctive protected forest territories and is recognized as a Natura 2000 site for its importance to breeding birds and other protected species. A small slice of its area, about 24 hectares, overlaps with the state-protected Barnenai telmological reserve, which adds mire and wetland value to the otherwise forest-dominated landscape. The reserve's identity is shaped by old-growth-friendly forestry, strong seasonal restrictions on forestry operations during the breeding season, and the deliberate preservation of deadwood, large living trees, and natural hydrology. Together these characteristics make it one of the most important inland forest conservation areas in this part of the Baltic lowlands.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
