The Dutchmans Stern Conservation Park

The Dutchmans Stern Conservation Park is a protected area in South Australia, located about 5 kilometres north-west of the town of Quorn in the southern Flinders Ranges, roughly 25 kilometres north-east of Port Augusta. The park sits within the gazetted localities of Emeroo and Quorn and covers an area of 3,695 hectares centred on a rugged ridge that includes the prominent mountain known as The Dutchmans Stern at its northern end. The conservation park protects a striking ridgeline landscape of crests, slopes, foothills, and gullies that contrast with the surrounding pastoral land, much of which has been grazed for over a century. Its habitats range from higher elevation ridges and exposed slopes to seasonally damp gullies and foothill woodlands, supporting eucalypt communities and wildlife found at their most northerly limit in South Australia. The park was proclaimed in 1987 under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 for the protection of its geological features, scenic values, and native flora and fauna. It is classified as an IUCN Category VI protected area and is managed by the South Australian Department for Environment and Water, providing a refuge of natural vegetation amid a broader region shaped by long-term pastoral use and water catchment infrastructure.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
