Valle de los Cirios

Valle de los Cirios is a large Mexican Flora and Fauna Protection Area located in the southern half of the state of Baja California, in the municipality of San Quintín. The reserve encompasses a sweeping section of the Baja California peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez, making it one of the largest protected desert landscapes in Mexico and one of the most ecologically significant arid reserves in North America. The protected area is named for its dramatic populations of cirio, the tall columnar cactus (Fouquieria columnaris) that defines the region's vegetation silhouette and gives the landscape its striking character. Beyond the cirio woodlands, the reserve shelters a mosaic of Sonoran Desert ecosystems, montane chaparral, coastal dunes, oasis palm groves, and rocky sierras, supporting an extraordinary concentration of endemic cacti, reptiles, and large mammals. Valle de los Cirios has been on Mexico's Tentative List for UNESCO World Heritage recognition since 2004, reflecting its combination of intact desert habitat, high endemism, and ecological connectivity across one of the best-preserved arid landscapes in the Americas.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
