Vallée du Fango

The Vallée du Fango is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve located in the Haute-Corse department of Corsica, in the western part of the island. It takes its name from the Fango, one of the rare true rivers of Corsica, which rises in the high mountains near Capu Tafunatu and flows down a steep, forested valley before emptying into the Gulf of Galéria and the Mediterranean Sea. Recognized internationally since 1977, the reserve (now broadly named Falasorma-Dui Sevi) covers a Mediterranean watershed mosaic that ranges from alpine peaks to a coastal estuary, sustained by exceptionally clear, low-mineralization waters. The defining natural heritage of the reserve is the ancient holm oak forest of Piriu, where centuries-old evergreen oaks stand alongside maritime and black pines. The landscape includes pine-dominated slopes, maquis shrubland, riparian alder and willow corridors, sand dune formations at the river mouth, and a small estuary that supports populations of European pond terrapins and Mediterranean freshwater life. Although human activity in the valley remains limited, traditional pastoralism once shaped the vegetation patterns seen today, and the reserve is now balancing growing recreational interest with long-term ecological protection.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
