Vottovaara

Vottovaara is a prominent rocky massif on the West Karelian Upland in central Karelia, Russia. It rises as a roughly north-south oriented ridge of jatulic quartzites and quartzite sandstones, dissected by numerous faults that may have been reactivated in post-glacial time. The summit area, around 417 meters above sea level, hosts an extraordinary landscape of large boulder fields and balancing stones that have attracted both scientific and popular attention. The site first drew wider interest in the late 1970s and early 1990s, when local and archaeological enthusiasts argued that the stone arrangements were man-made cult sites linked to ancient Saami ritual practice. Mainstream archaeology treats most of the structures as natural formations or modern fabrications, and this controversy is itself part of Vottovaara's identity. In 2011 the Republic of Karelia designated the mountain complex as a landscape natural monument, and in 2023 the Russian federal government established the Vottovaara National Park, grouping the massif together with surrounding lake and forest territories.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
