Waro Limestone Scenic Reserve

Waro Limestone Scenic Reserve is a small conservation area on the North Island of New Zealand, located near the settlement of Waro and the town of Hikurangi, roughly 16 kilometres north of Whangārei in the Northland region. The reserve protects a striking cluster of limestone formations that rise from the surrounding farmland, the most famous of which is Cathedral Rock, a tall, weathered outcrop that has drawn visitors since the late nineteenth century. Beyond its scenic qualities, the reserve carries strong cultural significance. The local Māori iwi of Ngāti Hau, Ngāti Kahu O Torongare, and Ngāti Wai regard the rock formations as waahi tapu, or sacred sites, and have used them for ritual purposes for generations. The surrounding landscape also preserves an unusually layered industrial past, with the remains of coal mines, narrow-gauge tramways, lime kilns, and a flooded marble quarry all intersecting with the natural limestone terrain. Today, the reserve functions primarily as a place of quiet natural and cultural heritage rather than a major tourist attraction. Its combination of unusual geology, indigenous spiritual importance, and traces of New Zealand's early extractive industries makes it a distinctive local landmark within the Hikurangi area.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
