Witsand Nature Reserve

Witsand Nature Reserve is a small protected area in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, set on a sand-covered plateau roughly 80 km southwest of Postmasburg and 59 km northeast of Groblershoop. Covering about 3,500 hectares at an elevation near 1,200 metres, the reserve is dominated by red sand dunes that rise above the surrounding arid plain, giving the place its name, which translates from Afrikaans simply as 'white sand'. The reserve's defining feature is a natural phenomenon sometimes called 'singing sand'. During the dry summer months, when the sand grains are dry and loose, walking across the dunes can produce a deep, resonant roar. This unusual acoustic effect, combined with the quiet, remote setting of the Kalahari fringe, makes Witsand a distinctive destination within South Africa's network of provincial nature reserves, even though it is relatively small and off the main tourist routes.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
