Yathong Nature Reserve

Yathong Nature Reserve is a large protected nature reserve in the central-western region of New South Wales, Australia, recognized nationally and internationally as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve under the Man and the Biosphere Programme since 1977. Covering roughly 107,000 hectares of semi-arid country, it is the most extensive nature reserve in New South Wales and forms the central anchor of the Central NSW Mallee Important Bird Area, sharing a border with Nombinnie Nature Reserve to the south-east. The reserve protects a distinctive mosaic of mallee shrublands, semi-arid woodlands, and grassy woodland communities set within two major Australian bioregions: the Cobar Peneplain and the Murray Darling Depression. Its biodiversity is shaped by subtle climatic gradients and geographic contrasts, supporting around 460 recorded plant species and more than 250 recorded animal species, including mammals, reptiles, and a rich bird community of about 162 species. Cultural heritage values and a long history of grazing land use add further significance to this conservation landscape. Yathong is notable for the intactness of its mallee vegetation, a habitat type that has been heavily reduced elsewhere in Australia through clearance and grazing. The reserve therefore serves as an important refuge for ground-dwelling and mallee-dependent birds, kangaroos, and reptiles, while also functioning as a living cultural landscape connected to the Ngiyam and Wiradjuri traditional owners of the region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
