Zhaltyrkol Sanctuary

Zhaltyrkol Sanctuary is a state zoological sanctuary in the West Kazakhstan region of Kazakhstan, set within the basin of the Ural River. The reserve takes its name from Zhaltyrkol, a shallow closed lake formed by the Kushum River, alongside the neighboring Itbatyr lake. Together the lake system and its reed and cattail margins create one of the more important wetland habitats in this part of the Kazakh steppe. The sanctuary was established to protect rare and declining animal species in the Ural basin. It supports a mix of typical steppe mammals and a rich community of breeding and migratory waterbirds, making it a meaningful refuge for waterfowl and game species in a region that has otherwise seen heavy land use. Conservation management here focuses on maintaining nesting habitat, monitoring wildlife, and supporting conditions for vulnerable species such as the saiga antelope in surrounding landscapes. Although small by national-park standards, Zhaltyrkol plays an outsize role in safeguarding wetland-dependent birds and fish in a fragile steppe environment. The reserve is managed by the Committee for Forestry and Hunting, and proposals have long existed to expand it substantially to better protect waterfowl and saiga.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
