Alutaguse National Park

Alutaguse National Park is a national park established in 2018 in eastern Estonia, representing the country's most recent addition to its network of protected areas. The park occupies a substantial territory of 443.31 square kilometers across the Alutaguse Lowland, a region characterized by sparse settlement and extensive natural landscapes. This area was created by consolidating eleven previously designated protected areas into a unified national park, bringing together diverse habitats under coordinated conservation management. The park spans portions of Alutaguse, Lüganuse, and Jõhvi parishes in Ida-Viru County, making it more than three times larger than Estonia's Karula National Park. The landscape of Alutaguse is dominated by peat bogs, which cover approximately 54% of the park's territory, complemented by forests that occupy around 42% of the area. This combination of wetland and woodland creates a distinctive northeastern Estonian terrain that differs markedly from the more agricultural landscapes found elsewhere in the country. The park protects representative and rare bog, forest, and coastal landscapes typical of eastern Estonia, along with associated biodiversity and cultural heritage features. Alutaguse holds significant ecological importance as habitat for several rare and protected species. The park provides refuge for the Siberian flying squirrel, a secretive nocturnal rodent that depends on old-growth forest habitats, as well as the willow ptarmigan, a ground-dwelling bird of northern forest and bog ecosystems. The black stork, a distinctive wading bird that breeds in mature forests near wetlands, also inhabits this protected area. These species represent the park's role in conserving Estonia's boreal and wetland biodiversity.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate
