The park consists primarily of primary rainforest and encompasses two main components: Mantadia National Park and the Analamazoatra Reserve, the latter known locally as Andasibe after the nearby village. This rainforest ecosystem harbors exceptional biodiversity, including 11 lemur species and numerous endemic, rare, and endangered species, making it one of the most species-diverse protected areas in Madagascar. The park was established in 1989 and is managed by the Madagascar National Parks Association, receiving approximately 26,000 visitors annually.
