Azraq Wetland Reserve

Azraq Wetland Reserve is a nature reserve situated in the town of Azraq in Jordan's eastern desert region, representing one of the most ecologically significant wetland habitats in an arid landscape that would otherwise be devoid of surface water. The reserve was established in 1978 by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) and covers approximately 12 square kilometers of restored wetland habitat, though it represents only a fraction of the original wetlands that once covered a much larger area. The site holds Ramsar Convention designation as a recognized wetland of international importance, dating from 1977. What makes Azraq remarkable is its location in the heart of the Jordanian badia, a vast desert environment where the presence of permanent freshwater springs created a unique ecological oasis that has historically served as a critical stopping point for millions of migratory birds traveling between Africa and Europe, as well as a vital water source for desert caravans traversing ancient trade routes connecting Arabia, Mesopotamia, and Syria.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
