Bavispe Flora and Fauna Protection Area

Bavispe Flora and Fauna Protection Area is a large protected area in the state of Sonora, in northwestern Mexico. It encompasses five separate tracts that together span Sierra Los Ajos, Sierra Buenos Aires, and Sierra La Púrica, three of the northern ranges of the Sierra Madre Occidental. The reserve sits in the upper basin of the Yaqui River, one of the most important watersheds in northwestern Mexico. Designated for long-term conservation of forest ecosystems and wildlife, the area is dominated by pine-oak forest and supports an unusually rich mix of species for its arid-region location, including jaguar, puma, American black bear, thick-billed parrot, and Yaqui catfish. Because it bridges the pine-clad mountains of the Sierra Madre with the surrounding Sonoran uplands, the reserve plays a key role in preserving habitat connectivity in the region. The area has a long protection history: it was first decreed as a reserve in 1936 under President Lázaro Cárdenas, amended in 1939, and in 2017 was re-designated from a national forest reserve and wildlife refuge into Mexico's flora and fauna protection area category to better reflect its conservation objectives.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
