Betla National Park

Betla National Park is the only national park in the Indian state of Jharkhand, situated in the Latehar and Palamu districts. Established as a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 1974 and declared a national park in 1986, the park spans 226.32 square kilometers of diverse forested terrain within the larger Palamu Tiger Reserve. The name Betla derives from the first letters of the major wildlife species found within its boundaries: Bison, Elephant, Tiger, Leopard, and Axis (chital). The park features a rich mosaic of sal forests, bamboo thickets, and grassy riverine habitats along the North Koel River and its tributaries, supporting one of eastern India's most significant tiger populations and a remarkable variety of other large mammals.
