India's second-largest mangrove wetland, a Ramsar site famed for saltwater crocodiles and olive ridley turtle nesting

Bhitarkanika Mangroves

Bhitarkanika Mangroves is a vast mangrove wetland located in the coastal state of Odisha, India. Spread across roughly 650 square kilometers in the deltaic plains where the Brahmani and Baitarani rivers meet the Bay of Bengal, the area forms one of India's most important stretches of mangrove forest and one of the larger mangrove systems in South Asia. The wetland is internationally recognized for its rich biodiversity, supporting dense mangrove vegetation, estuarine wildlife, and one of the most important nesting grounds for the olive ridley sea turtle along the Indian coast. It is also renowned as one of the strongholds of the saltwater crocodile in India. Designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 2002, Bhitarkanika sits at the core of a broader conservation landscape that includes Bhitarkanika National Park, the Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary, and the adjoining Gahirmatha Marine Wildlife Sanctuary along the Bay of Bengal.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
