Borail Wildlife Sanctuary

Borail Wildlife Sanctuary lies in the southern part of Assam, India, in the Cachar district, where the foothills of the Barail range rise from the Surma valley into the broader hill landscape of northeast India. The sanctuary brings together the former North Cachar Reserved Forest and Barail Reserved Forest under a single protected-area umbrella, preserving a continuous block of moist tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forest across a notable range of elevation. Ecologically, the sanctuary is valued for its combination of primate-rich forest canopy, large hornbill populations, and endemic plant species described from within its boundaries. Although smaller than many of India's flagship reserves, Borail has gained recognition as an important refuge for the hoolock gibbon, capped langur, clouded leopard, and several threatened hornbill and vulture species. Since its establishment in 2004, the sanctuary has served as both a conservation area and a regional attraction, with the nearest town of Silchar providing a gateway for visitors interested in forest trekking and birdwatching in the Barak valley region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
