Ciénegas del Lerma

Ciénegas del Lerma is a protected wetland complex in central Mexico, located in the upper basin of the Lerma River on the Toluca Valley plateau of the State of Mexico. Designated a Flora and Fauna Protection Area in 2002 and recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 2004, the site is made up of three main lakes, Almoloya, Lerma, and San Bartolo, that are the surviving fragments of an enormous marshland system once covering tens of thousands of hectares. The protected area preserves open-water lakes, swamps with floating and deep-rooted vegetation, and surrounding riparian woodland in a strongly altered highland landscape. Beyond its ecological function as a flood regulator and wildlife refuge, Ciénegas del Lerma supports traditional rural livelihoods based on fishing, livestock grazing, water-plant harvesting, and seasonal hunting of migratory waterfowl, all of which still take place within and around the reserve. The reserve is ecologically significant at the national scale because it harbors endemic and threatened species such as the Lerma axolotl and the Mexican duck, while also functioning as an important wintering destination within the Central Flyway for migratory aquatic birds. Its conservation importance is heightened by the surrounding pressures of urban sprawl, aquifer over-extraction, untreated wastewater discharges, and agricultural land-use change that continue to affect the water bodies.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
