General Juan Pablo Peñaloza National Park

General Juan Pablo Peñaloza National Park is a protected highland area in the Venezuelan Andes that safeguards a cluster of páramo ecosystems along the border between Mérida and Táchira states, northwest of the Táchira Depression. The park's defining character comes from its rugged páramo landscape, with elevations rising from forested mountain slopes near 1,800 meters up to the summit of Pico El Púlpito, the highest point in Táchira state, and including more than 130 periglacial lakes of varying sizes scattered across the high country. The reserve plays a critical hydrological role, since several of the region's major rivers originate here, feeding the Uribante-Caparo hydroelectric complex and supplying water to surrounding communities. Beyond its scenic mountain terrain, the park is notable for its biological richness. The altitudinal gradient runs from sub-Andean forests through humid and very humid montane forests and reaches the sub-Andean pluvial páramo, supporting iconic Andean wildlife such as the spectacled bear, the mountain tapir, and the endemic páramo guache, alongside diverse highland birdlife and a number of páramo-adapted plant species including several frailejón varieties.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
