Hallasan National Park

Hallasan National Park encompasses the volcanic peak of Hallasan, the highest mountain in South Korea, rising 1,950 meters above sea level on Jeju Island in the Korea Strait. Established on March 24, 1970 as the country's ninth national park, the 153-square-kilometer protected area encompasses the mountain's slopes, crater lake, and surrounding terrain across Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. The park is centered on Hallasan, a shield volcano formed during the Cenozoic era and composed predominantly of basalt, which gives the mountain its distinctive gentle eastern and western slopes and steeper southern face. The summit features Baekrokdam, a crater lake of significant ecological interest. In 2007, the park became part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes, recognizing its outstanding universal value. The park is unique among South Korea's 22 national parks as the only one managed directly by the provincial government rather than the Korea National Park Service.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
