Khenifiss National Park

Khenifiss National Park is a protected area in southwestern Morocco encompassing a remarkable transition zone where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Sahara Desert. Established in 2006, the park covers approximately 1,850 square kilometers along the coast in the Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra region, situated between the towns of Tan-Tan to the north and Tarfaya to the south. Its most distinctive feature is the Khenfiss lagoon, which represents the largest lagoon system on the Moroccan coast and serves as a critical habitat for migratory birds. The park holds Ramsar Wetland status since 1980 and has been designated an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International, recognizing its international significance for waterbird conservation.
