Kranenburger Bruch

Kranenburger Bruch is a nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) of roughly 118 hectares situated just east of Kranenburg in the Lower Rhine region of North Rhine-Westphalia. It lies within the Düffel, the broad floodplain landscape of the Rhine, where the river's former gravel terraces were reworked into a low-lying wetland bounded to the south by the push moraine ridge of the Klever Reichswald. The reserve protects one of the last surviving remnants of a once extensive Niedermoor, a lowland peatland, whose formation depends on the local basin topography and the rich groundwater and spring discharge flowing down from the forested heights. After centuries of drainage, reclamation, and agricultural use, large parts of the original alder carr and peat substrate have been preserved through rewetting, extensive grazing, and reed management. Ecologically, Kranenburger Bruch is valued as wetland habitat for highly specialised plants and for waterbirds and waders, and it forms part of the broader Unterer Niederrhein wetland complex that has been recognised under the Ramsar Convention, the EU Birds Directive, and the EU Habitats Directive (FFH). Today the area combines wet meadows, reedbeds, hedgerow-lined pastures, shallow open water, and a small gravel extraction lake, all of which support a rich pattern of birdlife and rare wetland flora.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
