Laguna de Términos

Laguna de Términos is one of the largest coastal lagoons in Mexico, lying along the southwestern edge of the Yucatán Peninsula where it meets the Gulf of Campeche. The lagoon opens to the Gulf of Mexico and forms the centerpiece of an extensive tropical wetland system fed by major rivers, including the Palizada, Chumpán, and Candelaria. It is bordered by the city of Carmen on Isla del Carmen and lies adjacent to the Pantanos de Centla Biosphere Reserve. The lagoon is best known for its broad mangrove forests, which act both as a natural buffer against hurricanes and tropical storms and as habitat for fish, crustaceans, birds, and reptiles. Shrimp, snook, mojarra, shark, oyster, and sea turtles have long supported local fisheries, while dolphins are regularly observed in the lagoon waters. Designated a flora and fauna protection area in 1994 and recognized as a Ramsar wetland site in 2004, Laguna de Términos is one of Mexico's most important coastal protected areas and a key component of the country's largest hydrological basin.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
