Lake Amvrakia

Lake Amvrakia is a freshwater lake in the Aetolia-Acarnania region of western Greece, lying between the towns of Agrinio and Amphilochia. It occupies a tectonic depression northwest of Lake Ozeros and west of Mount Thyamos, and is classified as a karstic, semipolje-type lake formed from Mesozoic limestone deposits. The lake is part of the Natura 2000 network, reflecting its recognized ecological importance as a wetland habitat and a refuge for birdlife and rare invertebrate species. The lake's hydrology is strongly influenced by its karstic setting, with active connections to surrounding aquifers, and the water levels fluctuate notably from year to year because of evaporation and irrigation use. Its surface area has shrunk in recent decades as a result of prolonged drought and the draining of the shallow northern section of the basin. Cultivation and pastoral land use are widespread along its shores, particularly on the eastern side, while the western shore still retains more natural riparian vegetation and wetland character.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
